Martin Kent laments late penalty that cost Cov

COVENTRY prop Martin Kent claims the decisive penalty that cost his side the chance of becoming the first to beat runaway league leaders Barking should not have been awarded.Phil Maynard’s side were leading 18-16 deep into added time on Saturday and were on the brink of not only recording their maiden victory of 2011 but also breaking a four-game losing streak.

However, they were denied four minutes into injury time when front rower Kent was accused of pulling down a scrum in front of his own posts.

That allowed visiting full back Adam Armstrong to slot his fourth penalty of the game, nick the points and help Barking remain unbeaten at the top of National One.

But Kent insists they should never have been given that opportunity. “The referee said I dropped the scrum but it was just a slip,” the 28-year-old maintained.

“He said the pressure came on and I pulled it down. But what would I have to gain from doing that in that position? Giving away a penalty?

“This season refs have been very naive about what’s going on in the scrums, I don’t think they are very aware of it.

“I was very frustrated at myself and the referee. Five losses on the bounce is very difficult to take on board but we have got to try and keep each other motivated and keep looking forward.”

Whoever heard of a ref that actually understands what goes on in the front row? The logic is impeccable - what could possibly be gained by bringing a scrum down in such a position?

All the more reason to stay on your feet then. !!!!

If you can't trust the ref dont give him the option to get it wrong.

Martin Kent messed up, no one else.

it was the play before that caused the scrum, that cost us, if we'd have looked after the ball and not dropped the dam thing we wouldn't have been in that position, end of story, move on, beat Blaydon

woods, it's in the hipflask! (Steve Emms)

Well it's obviously not from someone with any clue about playing as prop - it reinforces my point about how little idea refs have - most supporters are the same.
