Coventry prop Martin Kent to have surgery on broken hand

COVENTRY are hoping Martin Kent will not be out for too long after the prop broke his hand in Saturday’s victory over Blaydon. The 28-year-old was withdrawn 44 minutes into the 23-10 win, a result that snapped their five-game losing streak and rekindles their hope of a top-half finish.

But the dependable prop will today have surgery on the injury in which he will have a metal plate inserted and will miss at least the next four weeks.

With loosehead Tom Warren still out with a back problem rugby director Phil Maynard will consider strengthening his front row resources ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.

It was the one downside on an afternoon when Cov were finally rewarded for their endeavours as tries from Dale Ager, Charlie Sadler and Jeff Gregson brought the Blue and Whites their first win since January 8.

And Maynard could not have been happier with the way his team – especially the forwards – dominated the opposition.

“It was a really decent performance,” he said. “The effort that the lads have put in over the course of the season – but especially the last few weeks – had to get some reward. After what happened last week – having put all that effort in against Barking – there was a danger of us starting to slide back because we weren’t getting our just deserts.

“But it is a measure of our lads’ characters that they stayed together and stuck to their guns in difficult conditions and got the result.”

However, Coventry can not rest on their laurels. They head to Redruth this weekend for their longest trip of the season to face a team that is the only one to have played league leaders Barking and not lost.

Bad news for him and Cov's front row, lets hope his op is a success and he gets back before the season's end, unlikely though.

Good luck to Martin, I thought he did very well on Saturday.

The whole pack did very well on Saturday. How they got enough purchase in the terribly soggy conditions to beat the Blaydon pack as easily as they did is beyond me. They sent them back time and again to the extent that the Blaydon pack were rarely able to get the ball or to get it early enough to release the backs.
