IN-FORM wing Tom Harris has set his sights on finishing his first season at Coventry as the club’s top try-scorer.The 24-year-old bagged a second hat-trick in five games in Saturday’s gutsy 27-27 draw at Blackheath.That took his tally to the season to 14 and is now just one behind second row Sam Herrington who has been slowed by a toe injury in recent weeks.
And the former Rugby Lions hitman is desperate to take advantage, with five games to go he is breathing down Herrington’s neck and is also only three off the league’s leading pair, Tynedale’s Sepp Visser and London Scottish’s David Howells.
That has Harris thinking of a domestic double. “Naturally it pops into your head but I have got to keep myself focused,” he said.
“I like to score tries and want to do it all the time but as long as I do my job and the other boys do theirs they will come naturally.
“I am loving it at the moment. I am nearly equal with Sam now, I feel full of confidence and me and the boys have got a pact so that hopefully I can beat him.
“He has a lot to say about it, he’s a good bloke and there’s lots of good banter about it. It would be brilliant, I would be as proud as anything.”
Harris could go head to head with Howells this weekend as the table-topping Exiles come to Butts Park looking to steal a march on promotion rivals Barking.
The high rolling Londoners will be huge favourites for a victory but Harris is not so sure. “We have a good chance at messing up their parade a little bit,” he said.
“We gave them a good games down there and we should have beaten them. On our own patch and with the bit of confidence we’ve now got we’ve got a chance of causing an upset.”
Coventry will assess the extent of injuries to Brett Daynes and Adam Parkins at training this evening.
Back five forward Daynes picked up a dead leg at Rectory Field while Parkins hurt his hip.
However, Tom Warren made a pleasing return from his back injury when he came off the bench and played his first half hour since January 22.
