Richards aims to kick Cov back into gear.

COVENTRY kicker Danny Richards has revealed his determination to make up for last week’s misses when London Scottish visit Butts Park Arena on SaturdayThe playmaker, who has appeared at full back in the last three matches, was successful with just one of his five conversion attempts in the draw against Blackheath last time out.

 

And although the Blue and Whites left the Rectory Field with many positives and a 27-27 draw, Richards knows just one more goal would have brought a priceless victory.

The former Broadstreet fly half admits he struggled with the wind and was knocked out of his stride early on.

“On the second attempt the ball fell off the tee, I asked the ref if I could put it back up but he said I wasn’t allowed to so with their players charging it I had to get the kick off as quickly as possible,” he said.

“That played on my mind a little bit during the rest of the game, it was unlucky but I don’t want to use it as an excuse. Some of them were kickable – although their guy missed some too.

“A few of the players came up to me and said they thought I had a good game but sometimes you take these things to heart. It’s something I take a personal pride in because it can benefit the team.”

Which is why he is desperate for another chance when the league leading Exiles arrive on Saturday having not been beaten in 21 matches. But he knows he will have to move on from last weekend’s disappointment. “I have got to look to put it out of my mind this week,” the 26-year-old said.

“I have got to try and look at every kick as a new one, forget what went before and treat then all on their own merit. Hopefully I will get an opportunity to put it right this week.

“We know it is going to be a challenging game but we are looking to build on the last few weeks and a couple of encouraging performances.”

Dan you have proved yourself as a quality player , use this season as a springboard for greater things wearing the cov jersey, you can do it .

I imagine that kicking is all about form, the 8 or so weeks that Richards spent before xmas to march without setting foot on the pitch of a competitive match must have been devastating for his confidence. He plays the army game and slots all his kicks and he is thrown straight in at the deepend out of position at fullback.I bet he struggled sleeping the night before the Stourbridge game!!

It is no surprise to me though that when the hiccup with the ball falling off the tee happened in the blackheath game and his routine was disrupted his kicking ability suffered as well. He had no form or confidence to fall back on.

WE NEED TO SORT OUT A 2ND TEAM! If Danny had been playing consistently all season, his fantastic kicking record at Broadstreet (the reason why he was one of the 1st local lads to be signed) shows that he probably would have been able to slot atleast one more kick and so add another 2 points to our league tally
