Dave Addleton set for return after two year retirement.

DAVE Addleton is set to extend his remarkable Coventry career into a fourth decade after being pressed into bench duty for this weekend’s final match of the season against Tynedale.

The 44-year-old forwards coach, who last played for the Butts Park outfit as an emergency replacement against Nottingham in 2009, officially retired in 2005.

But injuries to regular hookers Dale Agar and Matt Price mean the veteran will be named among the replacements this weekend and could extend his appearance total to 356.

That will mean he has represented his home town club in each of the last four decades having made his debut against Moseley in September 1989, since when he went on to play for Warwickshire, the Midlands and the Barbarians.

However, rugby director Phil Maynard admits the situation is not ideal. With Price out with an ankle ligament problem and Agar suffering with a broken wrist, Cov are already having to force Harrop – originally a flanker into front row service.

“Jamie will have to be injured or we will have to be winning by a long way to bring Aggie on although I am sure he'll be pestering me from the first minute," Maynard said.

“Is he ready for it? It’s something I’ve been trying to stop him doing all season but he should have at least a good 15 minutes in him if we need it. Hopefully that will put a few more people on the gate.”

Addleton would become the second member of Maynard’s coaching team to play in the last two weeks.

Backs coach Pete Glackin stepped in for Ben Russell at Otley last weekend as Cov secured their National One status with a gutsy 17-12 victory.

Russell is doubtful once again this Saturday after picking up a hip flexor injury in the build up at Cross Green.

Andy Weaver will miss the match with ankle ligament damage as Cov round off what has been an inconsistent but overall promising campaign.

“It’ll be the first time this season that we will be able to relax and just think about going out and enjoying ourselves,” Maynard said.

Wrap his head up, wind him up and send him on to cause havoc!!!!

My money is on a well-known Addleton welcome to the oppo hooker within 2 minutes.....

I think this is a huge mistake, he is a legend..... lets remember him for what he did in a Cov shirt.

Not only is it a mistake it is a huge gamble with his own health, the physical side of rugby should not be underestimated.
