SUMMER signings Liam Mather and Matt Weller are set to make their first league starts for Coventry in tomorrow’s National One game against Blaydon at the Butts Park Arena.
Rugby director Phil Maynard and his coaching team believe the time is right to introduce the pair as Cov look to extend a promising start of three wins from their opening four games which has taken them to fifth place in the table.
Midlands Under-20s lock Mather, who played at Nuneaton last season, is expected to come in for Sam Herrington with former Selkirk prop Weller replacing Adam Parkins at tight head.
“We have competition for places throughout the side and we need to give these lads a start,” said Maynard, “and with Sam and Adam on the bench it gives us strong impact options as the game goes on.”
Matt Tibbatts, who came on for the second half at Sedgley Park last week, continues at No.8 in place of injured skipper Jamie Miller, while centres Luke Myring and Nat McDonald have both recovered from knocks along with hooker Matt Price.
Cov fought their way back from 12-0 down to beat Park 18-12, and Maynard is looking for his side to build on the momentum of that performance and record their third home win of the season.
“Doing that away from home against a good side showed how much resilience there is in the side, and the way we managed the second half, especially from half-back, was probably the best we have played all season,” he said.
