Jamie Miller's Coventry RFC column.

THE hottest October since records began, a bonus point win on the road and England through to the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup, things couldn’t get much better for a Coventry rugby fan.

The long awaited bonus-point win finally arrived in the glorious sunshine at Goresbrook. Only two late tries from Barking took the edge of what was otherwise an outstanding performance.

Some critics will no doubt argue that there is cause for concern with the fact that all of our tries this weekend were scored by forwards. However, in my opinion it shows a good diversity of skills exists throughout the team.

Rugby is a constantly evolving sport and in recent years we have seen the gap close between forwards and backs.

Backs have become heavier, bigger and stronger while at the same time forwards have become fitter and more mobile.

Coaches have come to realise that although set piece is a vital element of the game, they cannot afford to have a pack of forwards only capable of winning scrums and lineouts.

It's the headgear Tom - times were when only forwards wore headgear. I wonder how Gully or Wilksie would have fared in the backs??
