COVENTRY winger Jeff Gregson believes both he and his team will get even better as their promising National One campaign develops.
The 23-year-old made his first start of the season in Saturday’s impressive 36-25 victory over Macclesfield, which saw Cov maintain fourth position but lifted them to within one point of second.
For the second week running Phil Maynard’s side built their victory on the foundations of a solid forward platform, which allowed them to score three first-half tries.
They ended up with five in all, including maiden scores for full back Mark O’Connor and scrum half Lewis Barker and first tries of the campaign for Matt Tibbatts and Heath Stevens.
But Gregson admits he wasn’t very happy with his own performance and has promised to do better as he comes back from the hamstring injury picked up two months ago in the warm-up match with Doncaster.
“I was not very pleased with the way I played on Saturday, certainly compared to how I played last season. I have got a lot to work on,” he admitted.
“But that will come as I play more. I haven’t had much game time because of the injury and I just need to get back to having things as second nature, like doing stuff in defence without having to think about it.
“It is frustrating because I had a really good pre-season, we have got a really good set-up where everyone knows what they are doing and I was playing quite well. I was ready to hit the season hard but it’s taken a few weeks to get back.”
