STAND-IN kicker Mark O’Connor stepped up to contribute 15 points with the boot as Coventry edged out Rosslyn Park 30-29 to move up to fourth place in National League One.
The 21-year-old full-back, who was making only his second league start, took over the goalkicking role from Luke Myring when the influential centre was forced to pull out of the game with a calf injury from training.
And O’Connor responded to the challenge with a 100 per cent return, kicking three conversions and three penalties including one from close to the halfway line, as opposite number Ross Laidlaw missed three from seven.
“Mark had a great game today and in the end his kicking made all the difference,” said Cov forwards coach Dave Addleton.
“It wasn’t an easy ask for him to follow Luke"
“He’s been on the edge of playing for a few weeks and hopefully this will have built his confidence up and he will continue to improve.
“He’s a talented young player.”
Cov led 23-0 at half-time with the advantage of the stiff breeze but had to withstand a strong recovery by the Londoners and were hanging on at the finish.
