You may be surprised RF. I was there from 1970 to 1973!
mind you, it looked a bit less like a high security compound then...
(edit - thinking about it, it was 70 to 73, but hey ho...)

The floodlights, the goon towers and the barbed wire fencing were installed in 1974 after Kimbo had left, but in direct response to him having been there.
Come to think of it, was this an an effort to keep people in or to keep people out?

Dear oh dear, this place clearly has quite some reputation. And what a roll call of previous students/pupils/incarcerees (lol).

I had 12 months there in 1974, then went back for 2 or 3 years once I'd started work. Day release jobby.

I was there 69/ 74 as a day releaser for my 5 year apprenticeship.
Good old days, sneaking off to the Kings Head or other establishments at lunch time......
And yes, I agree it not look so secure then, sign of the times I guess.

Quite coincidentally I went past there this afternoon for the first time in a long time. Didn't realise they'd built a bluddy great chunk on the front of it!
It's not the most attractive of places, but I do remember it had a great reputation as a catering college, and had a good restaurant that was open in the evenings on a commercial basis (I was there on an engineering course BTW!). Is it still a similar set-up?
