Cambridge v Coventry rugby preview.

This Saturday 28th January Coventry Rugby make the journey to Volac Park, to face Cambridge. Please note that kick off is 2pm.

Coventry will be still smarting from the late injury time try that denied them a victory over Cambridge earlier in the season, losing 27-29. Since then both sides have struggled to find consistency with Coventry in 9th place and Cambridge in 10th place, both with the same number of points and 10 wins each.

Last season Cambridge finished a very creditable 3rd position, but this year having to cut back their playing budget have struggled to make any impact on the league.

Under abrasive Director of Rugby Bob Crooks and likewise experienced captain and No 7 Darren Fox, assisted by ex Northampton hooker Andy Long, Cambridge are always capable of pulling out good performances, as shown by their wins over Rosslyn Park, Fylde and Blackheath. Recently they have lost heavily to Macclesfield and Rosslyn Park, and struggled to beat Barking.

With the 2nd worst defensive record in the league they have also found it difficult to score as many tries as last season.

Key Cambridge players to look out for include of course Darren Fox, the bane of Coventry’s life over the past two seasons, and one of the leading goalkickers Tom Wheatcroft.

Other players to note are winger Anders Morgenson, prop Tom Fidler, lock/flanker Gareth McComb and Daniel Hunter as scrum half.

Coventry will be relieved to have got a win last week, needing to build on that confidence not only to stop Cambridge completing a double over them, but to finish the season with a flourish.

confirmation is just coming through that due to financial restraints Cambridge have sacked their long standing DOR Bob Crooks, and all players on paying contracts have had a weeks notice of cancellation.What effect this will have on the team put out on saturday remaains to be seen.

Surely the RFU should be severely embaressed about this, and other similar incidents. Their commitment to clubs other that those in the Premiership is virtually non-existant - that is, until they deem it necessary to take some form of punitive action. Whether that's in the form of docked points or whatever, they are very ready to impose standards on the lower clubs, but I would suggest that their positive support is very much to be found wanting.
It's a great shame for Cambridge and other teams who have found themselves to be in a similar position.
The only positive is that it may help Cov to get an extremely important away win on Saturday.

I imagine that the Vultures will soon be circling to pick the bones clean. Anyone we might want to be approaching? A top point scoring inside centre for instance.

according to twitter the first two departures from CRUFC are believed to be prop Ben Cooper and No 7 Darren Fox both to Bedford.

If they are good enough, and have mortgages or the like to pay, why not.
You create a wage-paying game, you get a wage-earning mentality. It's only natural.

Blimey that was straight out of the traps. Can they get the paperwork through that quickly?

As on an earlier post remember Bedford at the Ricoh we only had ONE who felt he should not play, and the rest did the club proud.
