Coventry hit by injuries before final home match.

COVENTRY face another week of injury worries before their final appearance of the season at the Butts Park Arena in the aftermath of Saturday’s 55-33 defeat at Ealing Trailfinders.

Centre Heath Stevens, whose first-half touchdown made him Cov’s leading try scorer for the season, went off with a knee injury which already makes him a doubt for this weekend’s game against National League One champions elect Jersey, while scrum-half Lewis Barker was also in difficulty towards the end.

With Cov’s back resources already fully stretched, it leaves a headache for rugby director Phil Maynard who conceded that his side were unable to cope with Ealing’s slickness outside the forwards.

“They are a very skilful side,” said Maynard. “They move the ball well, and at pace, and they played exactly to their strengths. We played quite well in fits and starts, but we coughed the ball up too easily and gave them far too much space in the backs in the first 20 minutes after which the game was all but gone.

“When we went at them direct we realised that they are only mortal and what we could do to them, but it took us 18 phases to score our first try and they were only needing two or three which showed the difference.

“But I can’t fault the way that the lads kept going. We’ll show the same against Jersey, and in front of our own supporters for the last time, there will be an extra desire to win.”
