Phil Maynard slams 'unacceptable' Coventry performance...

PHIL Maynard has branded Coventry’s performance in their season opening defeat against Ealing as ‘unacceptable’.

The rugby director was shocked by the nature of his side’s 37-13 beating in Saturday’s curtain-raiser, a game that was supposed to be the first step on the road back to the Championship.

With a starting side featuring ten debutants, many of whom are on two-year contracts, Cov missed tackles, kicks for both points and position and were blunt in attack.

Coventry may still get there but Maynard admits his side have had a rude awakening against a side that is likely to be one of the National One pace-setters.

Most worrying for Maynard was the fact one of the Blue and Whites’ traditional strengths, the forwards pack, was completely negated by the Trailfinders who now have the brawn to go with their undoubted brain.

Coventry, though, were left with a dose of cold reality ahead of the trip to Cinderford, where they have failed to score in their last two visits.

“We told the players it was an unacceptable performance,” Maynard said.

“I think they recognise that and it’s a big wake up call for those of them that are not used to the division.

Saw PM'S face after the game, what was read is true . I did feel for him and the coaching staff after what was a promising pre-season. Lets take Cinderford on get a point or two and move on.

Can you believe it? In the first game of the season Luke Myring sustains another injury which will put him out "for several weeks". James Otutaha is also out for up to three weeks. And these are two of our best and most influential players.
Let's hope that PM's words to the team after the game ("unacceptable", etc) put the players into a frame of mind for the Cinderford game where they will respond like wounded tigers.
I can't go to the game but I so much want us to show that we are starting to put a promotion-pushing side together.
