Coventry coach Dave Addleton feels 'robbed' by penalty try.

COVENTRY forwards coach Dave Addleton has added to his voice to the bemusement emanating from Butts Park Arena after his team was ‘robbed’ of a precious National One victory.

Cov were leading 33-27 in the final seconds of Saturday’s thrilling encounter at Richmond only to concede a penalty try which home kicker Tom Platt converted to give the Londoners a one-point victory.

With Coventry centre Heath Stevens in the sin bin, the home team opted for a scrum and referee Thomas Davis adjudged Coventry had illegally kicked the ball out of the back.

But stunned Addleton denies Richmond should even have been in that position anyway.

“There was no threat to us at all,” the former hooker said. “You have got to go with the referee’s decisions but I don’t know where it came from.

“He warned them three times with our penalty try but he never warned us at all.

“There was the first set scrum which they went for when Heath got yellow carded and then it wheeled 90 degrees and we thought the put in should have gone to us but he gave it to them. Then on the reset in my view their No. 8 didn’t even have control of the ball.”

That left Cov having to pick themselves up after a second successive defeat and with fading hopes of reaching the top six.

And with no match this weekend they have plenty of time to stew on a result that has left them in tenth place. It also wasted what had been as spectacular turnaround.
