RUGBY director Phil Maynard voiced his frustration after watching Coventry throw away a 15-point lead to go down to a six-try National League One defeat at third-placed Blaydon.
Cov dominated the first 20 minutes of the game at Swalwell, but strayed away from their game plan and were 39-15 down before rallying to claim a four-try bonus point in a 39-25 defeat which leaves them two places above the relegation zone.
“We made a perfect start and the game plan we had put together all week was working like a dream,” said Maynard.
“All we needed to do was stick to it but instead we took the next step up when it wasn’t required and it let them right back into the game.
“After our second try you could see their heads were starting to drop, but we forgot what had been working for us, switched to an offload game and it led to a couple of turnovers which was all they needed to come back at us.
“Their fly-half played the percentages very well to keep them going forward, and by the time we got ourselves back together it was too late – it’s just so frustrating.”
