COVENTRY took a massive step towards National One safety with their best performance for several weeks against fancied Esher.
Phil Maynard’s side won for only the second time in two months and are now 15 points clear of the danger zone with only three games to play.
They can still be caught by third-bottom Wharfedale but the manner of last night’s display suggests they have nothing to fear.
Especially after they used the wind well in the first period and built up a 20-12 half-time lead with three tries from Cliffie Hodgson, Matt Tibbatts and Liam Munro.
It was the visitors who scored first, though, as the mercurial Charlie Walker scored a dazzling solo effort after just three minutes. Luke Daniels converted.
Hodgson replied with three points soon after when a turnover won the hosts a penalty and the South African was quickly back at the tee to convert Tibbatts’s score.
The No. 8 followed up Barker’s tapped penalty to plunge over from one metre out.
