Cov hoping to spoil Ealing Trailfinders' title celebrations.

COVENTRY travel to National League One champions Ealing Trailfinders tomorrow with every intention of spoiling the home team’s end-of-season party.

Ealing, who clinched the title two weeks ago, have been beaten just once since November and, with the most potent attack in the division, will start warm favourites in front of their own supporters.

But Cov go into the game in buoyant mood after last week’s 14-try double over Esher and Sedgley Park – results which guaranteed Cov’s status for next season – and, with the pressure off, rugby director Phil Maynard expects his side to respond to the occasion.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge of playing the champions just when we’ve hit a bit of form,” said Maynard. “The lads are up for it.

“It’s a game where both teams really have nothing to lose but want to prove a point,” said Maynard. “For us, it’s a chance to build on what we achieved in the last two games and put down a marker for next season.

“It’s been a season of what might have been and our lack of consistency has been the biggest frustration.

“But to produce two performances like that last week suggests that we are putting it right, and this is a chance for us to see if we have made significant progress.

“Ealing are worthy champions, their coaching team has been together for a number of years as have a lot of their players, they’ve just added gently every year to reach where they are now.

“They are reaping the benefits of having a largely settled squad that has grown together, that was the big difference when we played them up here in the first game of the season and were well beaten, but we have improved a lot since then and it will be interesting to see how far we have got.”
