Coventry Rugby statistical review season 2012/13.

As Coventry Rugby’s third season in National League 1 is completed, attached is a statistical comparison of these last three seasons. The following is an analysis of some of the salient points revealed in these figures, although I would stress that these comments are purely my own and do not necessarily form part of official Coventry Rugby club policy.
Overall it can be seen as a disappointing season compared to expectations at the beginning of the season, however, the statistics point to a more rounded approach.
Results-better league position, more points in league, more game points scored and fewer conceded. Average points scored per game up, average points conceded per game lowest in three seasons. Tries up, tries conceded down.
Second best defensive record in league only beaten by Champions Ealing.
Highest number of back row tries scored. Try and losing bonus points doubled.
Cliffie Hodgson club’s new record points scorer with 316, only pipped as top league scorer with a freak result on the last day.
Not all good news of course with the same number of wins 13, than the previous season although this hides at least 5 games which could or should have been won. More worrying was the fact that we only managed to beat one of the top six sides -Esher either home or away. A record of 11 losses out of 12 speaks for itself and does not make up for our much better record against teams around us in the league.
Attendances: after the previous season’s 20% increase back to reality as the recession and inconsistent performances start to bite resulting in a 20% reduction, although still marginally ahead of our average attendance three seasons ago.
What the figures also show is a much smaller fluctuation in actual match day attendance ranging from 600+ to 1100+ compared to the previous two seasons where the highest attendance was 1500+. This suggests that although our core following has remained largely static the casual visitor for high profile games has gone down by 400.
The key for a successful season is more consistency, with the majority of last season’s squad expected to re-sign this much needed continuity should bring a much better new season, with the introduction of a few more key signings.
