Coventry boss Scott Morgan has backed new skipper Robert Nash to prove himself worthy of captaining one of the most famous names in English rugby.

The 27-year-old led the team to a promising 41-12 over Hull Ionians in last Saturday’s National One opener.

It was also the openside’s competitive debut, having only arrived at the club a few weeks before following his hastily completed move from Cross Keys.

Indeed, Morgan admitted the back-rower had not been sure whether to accept the role, given his very recent transfer.

“He was chuffed to bits and very proud, but his concern was he wasn’t sure he had earned the right to be captain of Coventry Rugby,” Morgan said.

“He asked me to speak to some of the senior players first and I did that with five or six of them and they all felt Rob was the right choice.

“The fact he even thought that way shows he is the right man to lead the club because it says so much about him as a person.

“He epitomises everything I want. If I was playing in a team and was going into battle somewhere difficult, in tough conditions, I’d want to play 80 minutes with Rob. He is that sort of character.

“He leads by example and I think that is what he has done up until now. He is very professional and goes about his business in a quiet but exemplary manner.

“He speaks when he needs to but doesn’t talk for the sake of it. That’s the sort of player we want – doers, not talkers.

“It was a difficult decision. There is a lot of competition for places in the team, but I think it’s one we have got right.”

Morgan also revealed he will monitor the fitness of fly half Matthew Jones who missed last week after picking up a leg injury during the final pre-season match.

Youngster Will Maisey filled in admirably at Brantingham Park after first filling in for Jones in Jersey and will hope to retain his shirt this weekend.

And Coventry have also confirmed the signings of three more dual registered players, including Danny Hobbs-Owoyemi who spent part of last season at Butts Park.
