Too close for comfort, admits Cov coach Addleton

Forwards coach Dave Addleton conceded that Coventry’s performance in their 36-34 win over Tynedale fell well short of what will be needed in games against the top sides in National League One over the next three weeks.

Cov scored four tries in the first half hour at the Butts Park Arena to secure their bonus point but, 29-17 up at half-time, were hanging on at the finish and ended up conceding six tries themselves against a Tynedale side struggling in the bottom two.

“It was too close for comfort,” said Addleton. “We got the bonus point very early, but after that we just didn’t deliver and we nearly came unstuck. Sides like Tynedale don’t stop coming at you for 80 minutes. They keep working hard and you have to keep your foot on the pedal for the whole game.

You have to stick to your systems, build phases and hold on to the ball, but we started doing things we don’t practise in training and look what happened.

“Maybe the players had one eye on the games to come, I don’t know, but that sort of performance won’t be good enough in the next few weeks.”
