...Coventry RFC's scrum pays off
Everything comes from securing set-piece possession – and head coach Scott Morgan is happy that Coventry are now getting that area of their game just right.
Cov’s line-out has, by and large, functioned well all season, but Morgan admits that were some early concerns over their scrummaging which have now been addressed.
Loose head prop Andy Brown missed the opening month of National League One action after picking up an injury in Cov's pre-season game at Cardiff, while props Chad Thorne, Rikki Stout and Henry Sandys have all been in and out with injuries and hooker Chris Locke has been limited to just five replacement appearances after a succession of setbacks.
But the return of tight head Adam Parkins from Northampton, the form of Bath loanee Beno Obano at loose head and the arrival of hooker Finlay Sinclair from Cinderford to support the consistency of Matt Price have all helped to see Cov through a difficult period and reach a point where Morgan feels they can match anyone in the division.
“We’ve worked hard on our set scrum,” said Morgan.
“A lot comes down to personnel, but there was a massive focus on it after the first six to eight weeks of the season.
“We knew we had to improve it. We were probably lying fourth in the league and had a scrum that was rating around ninth, which was just not good enough.
