The battle for No.10 at the Butts Park Arena next season could be as intense as it is across the country approaching the General Election.
While Wales international fly-half Matt Jones is set to put pen to paper this week to commit to a third season at Coventry, the club’s first two announced new signings of the summer will both be aiming to put him under pressure come September – 23-year-old Caolan Ryan, who joins from Moseley after a successful loan spell at Stourbridge this season, and Adam Canning, 27, who has signed from Birmingham & Solihull after ending the current season as the second-highest scorer in National League Two North with 297 points.
Add to the mix Cliffie Hodgson, who came to Cov as a 10 but has played most of his recent rugby at full-back or centre, and Cov appear to have plenty of options and quality cover for the playmaker role.
It is a challenge which the experienced 31-year-old current incumbent Jones will surely respond to after playing every game in the season just finished and, first-choice kicker for the final few weeks after an injury to leading points-scorer Hodgson, contributing 187 points.
